Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The melting point of slags is correlated to the constituents in the processed ores. As the composition of ores and consequently slags varies in broad ranges the slags are considered to be UVCB substances. Consequently, it is impossible to define a melting point for slags. Considering the production process (smelting at 1200 °C) and taking inot account the melting points of common slags (available via ECHA´s website for registered substances), the melting point of slags, tin-smelting can be expected to be above > 450 °C.
Against this background experimental determination of the melting point of slags, tin smelting is considered to be not scientifically justified under REACH.
