An OECD 301B test conducted for the read-across substance, epoxidised soybean oil, indicate that the substance is readily biodegradable and as such will degrade rapidly in the environment. Information on the biodegradation of ethylene glycol has also been included as this may be a product of degradation. The information indicates that ethylene glycol will degrade rapidly in the environment. The substance is therefore considered to be readily biodegradable.


Soybean oil, epoxidised, ether with ethylene glycol has a high partition coefficient, >5.9. However, calculation of the potential for bioaccumulation using EPIWIN (V4.01) indicates that the bioconcentration is likely to be low, the BCF is estimated to be 3.57. Based on this low modelled BCF value a study is not considered to be necessary. In addition uptake into fish is expected to be hindered by the large molecular size. If taken up by fish, the substance is expected to be readily metabolized and excreted. Thus, the bioaccumulation potential is expected to be much lower than predicted from log Kow alone. Further to this, the substance is considered to be readily biodegradable and thus will not persist in the environment log enough for bioaccumulation to occur..


The lowest NOEC for the read-across substance is 580 mg/L. The substance is not classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction. As the substance does not fulfil any of the other criteria for classification as toxic under REACH Annex XIII, classification as toxic is not necessary.
