Description of key information

With high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic algae.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
500 mg/L

Additional information

For the hazard assessment of the acute toxicity to fish a read-across to the analogous substance 1,2 -epoxybutane (CAS 106-88-7) was used. Both substances reveal a comparable moelcular structure, are both readiyl biodegradable and revealed EC50 values for the acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates which lie in the same range. Therefore, the read-across is regarded as valid and no acute test on algae toxicity on 2,2 -dimethyloxiran is performed.

The toxicity of the analogous substance 1,2-epoxybutane on the green algae Selenastrum capricornutum was measured in a test according to German national standards DIN 38412 (BASF 1989). The EC50 (72h) for the growth rate determined to be > 500 mg/L.
