Description of key information

Didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) was inflammable within 2 min by the hot flame of a gas burner but did not spread out over a distance of 200 mm within 4 min. Thus, it does not need to be classified as highly flammable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Due to its structural similarities of DDAC and DTDMAC it is appropriate to use the value determined for DDAC also for DTDMAC as the key value.

Justification for classification or non-classification

A study was performed to determine the flammability of didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC)according to EU method A.10.by the ignition of a line of test material with a length of 250 mm, a width of 20 mm and a height of 10 mm with the hot flame of a gas burner. Quaternary ammonium compounds, di-C12-18-alkyldimethyl, chlorideswas inflammable within 2 min by the hot flame of a gas burner but did not spread out over a distance of 200 mm within 4 min. Thus, it does not need to be classified as highly flammable.

The commercial product is a solution of the substance in a mixture of isopropanol and water. Due to the isopropanol content, this commercial product is classified as a flammable liquid.
