There is evidence for lack of genotoxicity in bacterial cells for the related substance, 2,2'-dithiobisethanol, but studies on mammalian cells are not available and no data are available from testing in vivo. It is therefore not possible to reach a conclusion on genetic toxicity for the registered substance, 2 -(ethylthio)ethanol. In vivo testing is not proposed as the substance is a strictly controlled intermediate so exposure is not expected.
