Additional information

The liquid test item is non-flammable based on flash point and boiling point.

Ignition on contact with air:
C12-18-DMA is according to the Guidance on the Application of the CLP Criteria (1) known from practical handling to be not pyrophoric. It is produced, handled and stored under normal conditions in air without any observation in respect to pyrophoric properties. Therefore, there is no likelihood that the test item possesses pyrophoric properties. Further, an auto-ignition temperature of 235 °C at atmospheric pressure was derived for C12-18-DMA, demonstrating stability in air. According to these facts, further testing in respect to pyrophoric properties is not required.


Release of flammable gases in contact with water
The test item does according to the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria (2) show one or more of the following properties:
1. The chemical structure of the substance does not contain metals or metalloids;
2. Experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured in water or washed with water;
3. The substance is known to be soluble in water to form a stable mixture.
Therefore, it is considered as not forming flammable gases in contact with water. No further testing is required.

According to (1), the phenomenon of self-heating applies only to solids. Liquids or substances and mixtures with a low melting point (< 160 °C) should not be considered for classification as self-heating. The surface of liquids is not large enough for reaction with air, and the available test method is not applicable to liquids. Therefore, liquids and low melting solids are not classified as self-heating.
