Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No studies for members of the DMA category are available. Based on findings with DMAOs, it is concluded that DMAs of this category are not carcinogenic and do not have to be classified as carcinogenic according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Justification for classification or non-classification

In the absence of any carcinogenic activity in chronic studies with DMAOs, it is concluded that DMAs of this category do not have to be classified as carcinogenic according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

Additional information

No studies for members of the DMA category are available. However, one reliable study (reliability 2) with C10-16-DMAO is reported in the literature (Cardin et al., 1985). Rats were exposed for two years orally and mice dermally against various concentrations of test substance (oral exposure: 0, 4.24, 42.3, or 87.4 mg/kg bw/d for males and 0, 5.23, 52.6, or 107 mg/kg bw/d for females, dermal exposure: 0, 1.1, 2.8 or 5.6 mg/kg bw/d). No substance-related induction of hyperplasia or neoplastic lesions was observed in any organ.

Oral exposure concentrations were in the toxic range (see section “repeated dose toxicity”). NOAEL values for repeated-dose toxicity were reported in a  range between 40 and 50 mg/kg bw/d.

In a non-reliable study in rats (Lijinsky et al, 1984, reliability 3), where animals were exposed for 93 weeks to C12-DMAO at a dose of 250 mg/kg bw/d, no carcinogenic effects were observed as well.

Based on the negative findings with DMAOs, it is concluded that DMAs of this category are not carcinogenic and do not have to be classified as carcinogenic according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
