Description of key information

Bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate does not exhibit a significant bioaccumulation potential, as assessed by the breakdown products formed during hydrolysis.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate is susceptible to hydrolysis and degrades instantly, with an expected half-life (DT50) of less than 1 hour. Therefore, aquatic organisms will not be exposed to the parent substance. Instead, hydrolytical degradation products may be relevant for the assessment of the bioaccumulation potential. The partitioning coefficients of the known breakdown products are reported as follows:

- 2-ethylhexan-1-ol: log Kow = 2.73 (QSAR estimate, cf. IUCLID section 4.7)

- 2-ethylhexanoic acid: log Kow = 2.7 (exp. value reported on the ECHA dissemination page)

- 2-heptanone: log Kow = 2.26 (exp. value reported on the ECHA dissemination page)

- 3-heptanol: log Kow = 2.24 (exp. value referenced in EPISuite BAFBCF module)

Therefore, in accordance with REACH Annex IX, endpoint 9.3.2 "Bioaccumulation in aquatic species, preferably fish", column 2, a bioaccumulation study need not be conducted as the breakdown products have a low potential for bioaccumulation (log Kow ≤ 3). In addition, bis(2-ethylhexyl)peroxydicarbonate (including its hydrolytical breakdown products) is readily biodegradable, demonstrating complete mineralisation.
