Description of key information

The melting point of the xylene isomers ranges from -47.8 to 13.25˚C at standard pressure. The melting point of m- xylene is -47.8˚C, for o- xylene is -25.2˚C and is 13.25˚C for p- xylene.

The mean value is -20.0˚C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
-20 °C

Additional information

The CRC Handbook (Lide, 2008) is a peer reviewed handbook and so can be considered reliable and suitable for use as the key study for this endpoint. The data are supported by the results from the Merck Handbook (O'Neil 2006), with m-xylene, o-xylene and p-xylene having melting points of -47.4°C, -25°C and 13 -14°C, respectively.
