In accordance with REACH Regulation, Annex IX and X, Column 2, tests of short- and long-term toxicity to plants do not need to be conducted as direct and indirect exposure of the soil compartment is unlikely. The substance has little potential to adsorb to soil and is not persistent, being rapidly degraded by water and soil microorganisms.

There are literature reports of a study investigating the effects of diethyl phthalate on seedling growth on a single non-target plant species. The 14 day LC50 for growth was 134 mg/kg dry soil. Another study describes the effects of diethyl phthalate on developing spinach and pea seedlings, together with the effects of the presence of a soil microorganism capable of degrading phthalate esters. Seedling germination and vigour of spinach and peas were adversely affected by exposure to diethyl phthalate in the soil at a concentration of 0.1%. Inoculation of the soil with Micrococcus sp 12B, which is capable of degrading phthalate esters, significantly reduced the observed effect indicating that phthalate ester degradation may modify the observed adverse effects.
