Description of key information

A value of 27.1 mN/m can be seen as representative of the surface tension of chloroform at 20°C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:
27.1

Additional information

Available test data are not compliant with the relevant testing guidelines. The experimental values found in several publications (Cupples 1946, Hannan and Markham 1949 and Fanelli 1948) range from 25.2 to 26.7 mN/m at 25°C. These experimental values are in good agreement with the value reported in the HSDB data base (HSDB 2008) of 27.1 mN/m at 20 °C produced by Weiss (1986). All values indicate that chloroform is surface-active (threshold is 60 mN/m or lower). A weight-of-evidence approach is thus used for this property.
