Discussion of trends in the Category of C6-24 linear and essentially-linear aliphatic alcohols:

Linear alcohols up to C11 are liquids at 20°C when in their pure state. Between C12-24 they are waxy solids (though crystalline forms can be prepared by precipitation from certain organic solvents). Isomeric alcohols, with a branch present, melt at slightly lower temperatures than their linear equivalents. Commercial products which are mixtures of alcohols behave differently, some are liquid and some are amorphous solid, depending on the composition and chain lengths present.
