Based on the structure and experience in handling and use of the substance, it can be reasoned that flammability is not a concern.

Experience in handling and use of silicon carbide indicates the absence of pyrophoric and flammable properties: Silicon carbide is used as refractory material in combustion chambers of power plants, garbage incinerators and metal melting.

Rates of oxidation become significant only above 900 °C, at these temperatures a passivating oxygen layer is formed on the material surface. However, oxidation rate is so slow that silicon carbide is under all cicumstances considered inflammable.

Comparison with substances known to be pyrophoric or flammable on contact with water indicates that silicon carbide is highly unlikely to display these properties.

Taking together the experience in handling and use, the slowness of oxidation and the absence of structural alerts it can be concluded that pyrophoricity, flammability on contact with water and general flammability are no concern for silicon carbide.
