Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Short term toxicity data for silicon is not available. Instead, results on soluble silica is available and will be used as a supporting information on conclusions that dissolved silica does not have acute toxic ef-fects in fish at < 100 mg/l exposure level.
The solubility of monomeric silicic acid is known to be ca. 120-140 mg/l at neutral pH and room temperature at equilibrium. Solubility increases as pH increases. If the solubility limit is exceeded, colloid forming polymerization of silica is the consequence. The formed colloids have influence on test species and acute lethal effects have observed in fish e.g. injury of gill filaments. It is unlikely that aqute effects were seen in short term tests of elemental silicon, since the element is very slowly soluble and it would take long time to reach an equilibrium state in test solutions.

Additional information

Test results are not available for silicon. Read across/WoE aproach is used instead. Silicon has no environmental classification and therefore all LC50 values are expected to be > 100 mg/l. For CSA and PNEC derivation purposes LC50 for fresh water and marine fish are set to 100 mg/l.
