Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

6.1.5 - DISPERSE DYES - Reasoning

Justifications and discussions

Category definition:
1. CATEGORY HYPOTHESIS
The choice of the targets and the potential sources that compose the category was based on their common physicochemical characteristics. Indeed, all the targets and sources are disperse dyes, characterized by substantial insolubility (or very poor water solubility; WS < 1 mg/L) in water (see data matrix table). A substantial similarity in the molecular structure of the chemicals is also present. Anyway, the category approach proposed in this study will be based on the common physicochemical properties of the chemicals under investigation that can affect the behavior of the entire group of chemicals in relation to their potential aquatic toxicity, with particular reference to the endpoint under study (6.1.5).
Source and target chemicals (Including information on purity and impurities).

For the targets, the available information about the composition of the dye is reported in the section “1.2 – Composition” of the registration dossier.
The source substances listed below are selected as they belong the category of disperse dyes, have physicochemical properties similar to the targets (i.e., water insolubility or very low value of WS), and present an experimental data on algal growth rate (72 h; ErC50). These source substances are assessed in order to consider any possible concern of the category of disperse dyes on the endpoint under evaluation (6.1.5).
For the sources EC 235-475-5, EC 222-814-7, EC 226-070-4, and EC 259-563-8, 299, Croce et al. (2017) indicates a dye content higher than 70% for each tested formulation. However, information on the identity of impurities is not available.
No information on impurities is available for the other listed source compounds

Category description:
A category approach is considered for the endpoint 6.1.5 as all the members (targets and sources) are characterized by a substantial similarity in physicochemical properties, as well as in many elements of their structure (RAAF scenario n. 6; raaf_en.pdf)
Category rationale:
The choice of the targets and the potential sources that compose the category was based on their common physical-chemical behavior. Indeed, all the targets and sources are disperse dyes, characterized by a substantial insolubility in water that affects the behavior of the entire group of chemicals in relation to their potential aquatic toxicity to algae.
