Description of key information

Biodegradability of succinic anhydride was evaluated using the hydrolysis product succinic acid. Succinic acid and consequently succinic anhydride were found to be readily biodegradable using the OECD 301E test guideline.

In accordance with REACH Annex VIII column 2, a hydrolysis study does not need to be conducted as the substance is readily biodegradable. However, two sources report a half life of approximately 5 minutes for succinic anhyride.

Due to the low logKOW of succinic anhydride (2.44), the substance is expected to have a low potential for bioaccumulation and soil adsorption and testing of these properties is not indicated according to REACH Annex IX column 2.
