Discussion for CAS# 297730-93-9:
The water solubility of CAS# 297730-93-9 was addressed in four studies. The key study was done by a shake flask method equivalent or similar to OECD TG105 and in compliance with GLP. The first supporting study used a 15-day stirring protocol according to OECD TG105 and sets an upper limit of water solubility for CAS# 297730-93-9. However, no reliable figure is available for a definitive value. Therefore, the solubility is reported as < 4 µg/L. The second supporting study used a generator column method. Substance concentration remained below the detection limit (<2.3 µg/L). In the third supporting study, solubility was addressed using a novel vapor-phase transport and dissolution method. CAS# 297730-93-9 was allowed to vaporize in a sealed chamber, diffuse to water aliquots contained within the chamber, and dissolve into the aqueous phase. The experiment was continued up to 38 days, whereupon samples were analysed by purge-and-trap GC. The water solubility was 13.3 µg/L. However, the study report notes the presence of unidentified impurities that may have affected the solubility of CAS# 297730-93-9.
The key study and the first supporting study was conducted similarly or in accord with OECD Guideline 105 (Water Solubility) and EEC-Directive 92/69 EEC A.6: "Water solubility," and were compliance with GLP criteria. However, the key study had more definitive containment of the volatile test material and is preferred. The second supporting study was conducted using a generator column method without reference to a testing guideline, and was not conducted in compliance with GLP criteria. Further, the study report does not provide adequate documentation of the methods used. The third study uses a novel method without validation. The study report does not provide adequate detail as to the results, but notes the presence of impurities that may have affected the result. The use of an impure test solution casts further doubt on the reliability of this study.
Discussion for PFBA (degradation product), CAS# 375-22-4:
Though no method was provided, miscibility is readily discerned by formation of a single liquid phase for each mixture. Therefore, this study is deemed reliable with restrictions.
