Description of key information
Aquatic invertesbrates:
In the acute immobilization test with Daphnia magna (STRAUS), the effects of the test item Glycerol Monomethacrylate (GMMA) were determined according to OECD 202 (2004), which is equivalent to the Council Regulation (EC) No.440/2008 Method C.2 (2008). The study was conducted under static conditions over a period of 48 hours with a limit concentration of the test item Glycerol Monomethacrylate (GMMA). The tested concentration level was visually clear throughout the exposure period. Twenty daphnids (divided into 4 replicates with 5 daphnids each) were exposed to the test item concentration and the control. Based on the nominal test item concentration of the test item Glycerol Monomethacrylate (GMMA), the 48 hour-NOEC and EC50 for Daphnia magna was > 120 mg/L. The geometric mean measured concentration was 105 mg/L.
Aquatic algae and cyanobacteria:
The toxicity of Glycerol Monomethacrylate (GMMA) to the unicellular freshwater green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was determined according to the principles of OECD 201 and Council Regulation (EC) No. 761/2009 Method C.3. The study was conducted under static conditions with an initial cell density of 6839 cells/ml. A stock solution of 120 mg/L was freshly prepared with dilution water and agitated until the solution was visually clear and tested as a limit concentration. Six replicates were used for the limit concentration and the control. The environmental conditions were within the acceptable limits. The concentration of the test item Glycerol Monomethacrylate (GMMA) were analytically verified via LC-MS/MS at the start of the exposure (0 hours) and at the end of the exposure (72 hours) in the limit concentration and the control. The measured concentration of the test item at the start of the exposure (0 hours) was 94% of the nominal value. The measured concentrations at the end of the exposure (72 hours) was 97% of the nominal value. The geometric mean measured concentration was 112 mg/L. In this study, no inhibition of growth on the freshwater green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was found after 72 hours exposure to the test item Glycerol Monomethacrylate (GMMA). Based on the nominal test item concentration the NOEC (0-72 hours) for both inhibition of growth rate and inhibition of yield was 120 mg/L. The EC50-values for inhibition of growth rate (ErC50) and yield (EyC50) after 72 hours were > 120 mg/L, respectively. The geometric mean of the measured concentrations of the test item in the tested concentration was 112 mg/L.
Aquatic toxicity: Acute toxicity to fish:
A study was performed to assess the acute toxicity of the test item to common carp (Cyprinus carpio). The method followed was designed to be compatible with the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals (1992) No 203, "Fish, Acute Toxicity Test" referenced as Method C.1 of Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008. Following a preliminary range-finding test, seven fish were exposed to an aqueous solution of the test item, at a single concentration of 100 mg/L for a period of 96 hours at a temperature of approximately 20 ºC to 22 °C under semi-static test conditions. The number of mortalities and any sub-lethal effects of exposure in each test and control vessel were determined 1 and 3 hours after the start of exposure and then daily throughout the test until termination after 96 hours. Based on the nominal test concentrations the test material gave a 96-Hour LC50 of greater than 100 mg/L. The No Observed Effect Concentration was 100 mg/L.
It was considered unnecessary and unrealistic to test at concentrations in excess of 100 mg/L.
