- key study
- Study period:
- 12. Feb. 2019 - 16. May 2019
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- OECD Guideline 103 (Boiling Point)
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Type of method:
- differential scanning calorimetry
- Key result
- Decomposition:
- yes
- Decomp. temp.:
- ca. 310 °C
- Remarks on result:
- not determinable
- Remarks:
- The substance decomposes at 138°C.
- Conclusions:
- As the test item showed signs of decomposition before boiling stage no validity criteria need to be considered. The substance decomposes. A boiling point could not be determined.
- Executive summary:
The substance decomposes at 138 °C. A boiling point could not be determined. The boiling point of the decomposition product referring to the pre-test was determined under these circumstances as the second endothermic event. The event could not be completely detected because of the measuring limit of the instrument (445 °C). Beginning of boiling was detected at 347.06 °C (620.21 K) (lowest value) with a peak maximum at 402.82 °C (665.60 K) (highest value). A baseline level underrun was visible in all three determinations.

- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
- reference to same study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- other: see remarks
- Version / remarks:
- The boiling point was assessed in a preliminary test at the determination of the melting point according to Annex V, EU Method A.1 (Differential Scanning Calorimeter).
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Preliminary test at the determination of the melting point according to Annex V, EU Method A.1 (Differential Scanning Calorimeter). Details of the experimental procedure are not specified.
- GLP compliance:
- not specified
- Type of method:
- other: Preliminary test at the determination of the melting point. Details not specified.
- Remarks on result:
- not determinable
- Remarks:
- The boiling point has not been determined. In a preliminary test at the determination of the melting point, it was found that at temperatures above 175 °C an exothermic reaction was observed, probably caused by reaction or decomposition of the test substance. After the test the sample appeared to have been molten and had a brown colour.
- Conclusions:
- The boiling point has not been determined. An exothermic reaction was observed above 175 °C, probably caused by reaction or decomposition of the test substance. After the test the sample appeared to have been molten and had a brown colour.
- Executive summary:
The boiling point of 1,3-bis[12-hydroxy-octadecamide-N-methylene]-benzene has not been determined. At the determination of the melting point according to Annex V, EU Method A.1 (Differential Scanning Calorimeter), a preliminary test was carried out (details of the experimental procedure are not specified). Therein, an exothermic reaction was observed above 175 °C, probably caused by reaction or decomposition of the test substance. After the test the sample appeared to have been molten and had a brown colour.

- Guideline:
- EU Method A.2 (Boiling Temperature)
- Version / remarks:
- 92/69/EEC, A2 (Differential scanning calorimetery, ASTM E 537-76 OECD Guideline No. 103)

- Atm. press.:
- ca. 101.3 kPa
- Decomposition:
- yes
- Decomp. temp.:
- >= 144 °C
- Remarks on result:
- not determinable
- Conclusions:
- No boiling point was observed for the test substance 12-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid, reaction products with 1,3-benzenedimethanamine and hexamethylenediamine. The test substance melted from 115 to 124 °C followed by decomposition from 144 °C. A chemical change was observed between 125 and 140 °C. After the test, sample remains were black and crispy.
- Executive summary:
The boiling point of the test substance 12-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid, reaction products with 1,3-benzenedimethanamine and hexamethylenediamine was assessed in a guideline study according to EU Method A.2 (Differential scanning calorimetery). No boiling point was observed. The test substance melted from 115 to 124 °C followed by decomposition from 144 °C. A chemical change was observed between 125 and 140 °C. After the test, sample remains were black and crispy.

Description of key information
The substance consists of multiple different constituents with similar chemical structure: N,N'-ethane-1,2-diylbis(12-hydroxyoctadecanamide), N,N'-hexane-1,6-diylbis(12-hydroxyoctadecanamide) and N,N'-[1,3-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(12-hydroxyoctadecanamide).There are no experimental data on the multi-constituent substance available. The individual constituents and mixtures of structurally similar bisamides are considered suitable read-across substances. In experimental studies on the read-across substances 1,3-bis[12-hydroxy-octadecamide-N-methylene]-benzene, 12-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid, reaction products with 1,3-benzenedimethanamine and hexamethylenediamine and N,N'-ethane-1,2-diylbis(12-hydroxyoctadecanamide) decomposition of the test material was observed before the onset of boiling (decomposition temperature: 138 – 175 °C). Since all constituents are structurally similar to each other, the boiling behaviour of the multi-constituent substance is expected to be comparable to the properties of the read-across substances. Therefore, decomposition of the substance at elevated temperatures (> ca. 140 °C) before onset of boiling is expected. Further testing is not considered necessary.
