Description of key information

A chronic NOEC of 25 µg V/L  for the effect of V2O5 on the 48h-development of eggs from the marine mollusc Crassostrea gigas was derived from data reported by Fichet and Miramand, 1998 (Klimisch 2).

Vanadium, steelmaking, slags is a sparingly soluble UVCB substance that upon dissolution may release minor amounts of vanadium and insignificant amounts of other elements. Thus, regarding the environmental toxicity (if any), vanadium is the moiety of concern. In addition to the toxicity data for fish, invertebrates and algae, reliable studies (Klimisch 2) are also available for the acute toxicity of sodium orthovanadate to the naidid oligochaete Pristina leidyi (Smith et al., 1991; 48-h LC50: 30830 µg V/L; Klimisch 1) and the chronic effect of vanadium pentoxide on the 48h-development of eggs from the marine mollusc Crassostrea gigas and the marine echinoderm Paracentrotus lividus (Fichet and Miramand, 1998; Klimisch 2). For Crassostrea gigas a 48h LOEC value of 50 µg V/L was observed, while the 48h NOEC for Paracentrotus lividus was 50 µg V/L. Because less than 20% effect was observed at the lowest dose of 50 µg V/L for the development of Crassostrea gigas eggs, the NOEC was calculated as LOEC/2, resulting in 25 µg V/L. This NOEC value of 25 µg V/L was selected as key-value for the chemical safety assessment of marine water. Results for development of eggs are considered as chronic because of the critical life-stage. All results are based on total dissolved V concentrations.
