Description of key information

With high probability, 1-ethylpiperazine (CAS 5308-25-8) is considered to be acutely not harmful to aquatic organisms.

Additional information

Short-term toxicity to fish

With high probability, the substance is acutely not harmful to fish.

96-h LC50 = 316 mg/L (Leuciscus idus, DIN 38412, part 15, nominal, not pH-adjusted, BASF AG, 1990, rep. no.: 10F0950/885185).

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

With high probability the substance is acutely not harmful to aquatic invertebrates.

48-h EC50 = 199.3 mg/L (Daphnia magna, EU Method C.2, nominal, not pH-adjusted, BASF AG, 1988, rep.no.: 1/0002/2/88-0002/88).

Growth inhibition to aquatic algae:

With high probability acutely not harmful to algae.

The assessment is based on a read-across approach to a structurally similar substance: 1-methylpiperazine (CAS 109-01-3):

72 -h ErC50 > 352 mg/L, 72 -h ErC10 > 352 mg/L (OECD 201, nominal, analytically verified, pH-adjusted, BASF SE, 2013, rep. no.: 110907AG).

Toxicity to microorganisms:

The substance is not anticipated to inhibit the degradation activity of activated sludge when introduced in appropriately low concentrations.

1)     30 -min EC20 > 1000 mg/L. (domestic activated sludge, OECD 209, nominal, BASF AG, 1990, rep. no.: 01.0387/88)

2)     17-h EC10 = 141.4 mg/L (Pseudomonas putida, DIN 38412, part 8, nominal, BASF AG, 1988, rep. no.: 9/0843/88)

Based on the available data, 1-ethylpiperazine (CAS 5308-25-8) is considered with high probability to be acutely not harmful to aquatic organisms.
