Description of key information

The degradability of Piperonyl butoxide was estimated in a mineral test medium which was inoculated with micro-organisms from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Degradation was determined by measuring dissolved oxygen over a period of 28 days. The criterion for ready biodegradability of > 60% removal of the theoretical oxygen demand (ThOD) within the 28-d period was not reached. Therefore Piperonyl butoxide cannot be considered as readily biodegradable under the conditions of the closed bottle test (OECD 301 D) (degradation of Piperonyl butoxide after 28 days: -1.2%).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed
