No experimental data on toxicity to terrestrial plants are available for Fatty acids, C18 unsaturated, trimers, hydrogenated. In accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex IX, column 2, 9.4 further studies on the effects on terrestrial organisms do not have to be conducted since the chemical safety assessment indicates that there is no need. The test substance is characterized by a high log Koc (log Koc > 5) indicating a considerable potential for adsorption to the soil particles. Therefore, tests with soil-dwelling organisms that feed on soil particles are most relevant for the evaluation of soil toxicity of the test substance. As the substance is not expected to be found in the soil pore water, uptake by plants is very unlikely. Also, according to the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Chapter R.7c: Endpoint specific guidance, in the absence of a clear indication of selective toxicity, an invertebrate (earthworm or collembolan) test is preferred (ECHA, 2012). A testing proposal for a long-term earthworm study (OECD 222) with the structural analogue Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers (CAS No. 61788-89-4) is currently under evaluation. In the case of observed effects in the proposed test, additionally a long-term toxicity test with higher plants will be conducted according to ISO 22030 with the same substance. Otherwise it is assumed, that due to the lack of effects in long-term toxicity tests with soil invertebrates, as well as in a long-term toxicity test with fish within the solubility limit of the tested substance (CAS 68783-41-5) and low bioaccumulation potential, toxicity to plants is unlikely.

The dossier will be updated as soon as possible and the Chemical Safety Assessment according to Annex I of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 will be re-evaluated based on the outcome of the new studies.
