Description of key information

skin irritation: in a valid study tert-butylisocynante was strong irritant/corrosive to the skin
eye irritation: in a valid study tert-butylisocyanate was strong irritant/corrosive to the eye

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (corrosive)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Additional information

In a valid study tert-butylisocyanate was found corrosive/strong irritating to the skin.

In a valid study on eye irritation, tert-butylisocyanate was found corrosive/strong irritating. Immediately after application a moderate/strong redness and a moderate/very strong swelling were observed. Cornea was clouded.  All  findings persist up to end of observation period

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: corrosive

Effects on eye irritation: irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Due to the results of the key study for skin irritation/corrosion R34 is justified.

Due to the severe effects on the eye R41 is adequate.

In addition, respiration irritational effects were reported. Therefore R 37 is applicable
