First-aid measures

Inhalation : Move to a fresh air atmosphere. In case of persistent symptoms, consult a doctor.
Skin contact : Wash with soap and water.
Eye contact : Rinse immediately with plenty of water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
Ingestion : No adverse health effects anticipated by this route, however, in the event of ingestion, increase intake of liquid in order to flush from the body. In case of persistent symptoms, consult a doctor.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing Methods : Use any media appropriate for combustible material in the area.
Specific risks : Product is inert, non flammable and non combustible.
Special intervention methods : Product is inert, non flammable and non combustible.
Protection of fire-fighters : Usual protective equipment for fire fighters.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions : Avoid generation of dust. Ensure adequate ventilation. Wear personal protective equipment.
Environmental precautions : Prevent run-off from entering ground, storm sewers and ditches which lead to natural waterways.
Cleaning Methods : Use any feasible mechanical means (e.g. vacuum, sweeping) but avoid dusting during clean-up.

Handling and storage

Handling: Avoid raising and breathing dust. Observe good industrial hygiene practice for chemical handling.
Technical Measures: Avoid raising dust. Handling systems and areas should be operated in such a way as to minimise exposure to dust.

Precautions : Local exhaust ventilation may be necessary. Handle minimising dust. Take precautionary measures against static discharges.

Advice on usage : Manual handling guidelines should be adhered to.

Storage conditions : The formation of low concentrations of sulphur dioxide is possible in storage areas with poor ventilation. Such areas should be checked for gas buildup before entry and if necessary, appropriate acid gas respiratory protection suitable for sulphur dioxide to be worn.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Technical measures

Control parameters :Ensure sufficient ventilation. Reduce inhalation hazards in minimising the occupational exposure.
Dust TWA – 10mg/m3 (inhalable general nuisance dust)
Sulphur dioxide gas TWA – 2 ppm
Sulphur dioxide gas STEL – 5 ppm
Radiation (combined alpha and gamma) exposure should be as low as reasonably achievable, (ALARA), but should not exceed a total of 100 milli-seiverts over 5 consecutive years..

Protective equipment

Respiratory protection : Safety glasses or goggles. If risk of inhaling dust is present, wear at minimum, an
approved P1 respirator (disposable or cartridge type). Areas of potential sulphur dioxide (SO2) buildup should be checked with a suitable SO2 monitor. A half or full face P2 or P3 respirator with acid gas type cartridge should be worn if SO2 is present. If the concentration exceeds 50 ppm (10 X STEL), air supplied breathing apparatus should be used.

Skin protection : Respect main rules concerning the protection clothes for chemicals handling.

Hand protection : Prolonged exposure should be avoided by wearing suitable impervious protective gloves.

Environmental exposure controls : Do not allow material to contaminate ground water system.


Eye protection : The use of dustproof goggles or glasses with side protections is recommended if dust concentrations are likely to exceed the occupational exposure limit.

Hygiene Measures : Individuals having sensitive skin may find it beneficial to use a barrier cream or moisturizer when excessive or prolonged contact with the skin is likely.

Engineering controls and safe systems of work should be used in preference to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to minimise the risk of exposure. If the product is being stored or transported in a poorly ventilated area, some form
of mechanical ventilation may be necessary to ensure there is no build up of sulphur dioxide gas.

Disposal considerations

Waste disposal : Dispose of in compliance with local and national regulations.
