Description of key information

No reliable toxicity data are available for the effect of synthetic rutile to algae. A read-across approach between synthetic rutile and TiO2 is used. Reliable toxicity data to algae are available for a range of TiO2 products with varying particle size (from nano-particles to bulk powders). Algae are the most sensitive species to TiO2. The lowest 72-h EC50 value for growth rate was observed for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata in fresh water: 61 mg TiO2/L, with a corresponding EC10 of 12.7 mg TiO2/L. Tests with Skeletonema costatum in marine water result in an unbounded EC50 of >10000 and a NOEC of 5600 mg TiO2/L.
