Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

EC20 (21d) = 0.469 mg/L for Daphnia magna reproduction (QSAR estimation)
These NOEC-values are not used for PNEC-calculation as a HC5-approach is performed on the basis of chronic tests available for several species of different trophic levels.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

One publication is available for an alcohol ethoxylate mixture with a chain length of C12 - C13 and approximately 6.5 ethoxy groups. (Gillespie et al. 1999). The 21 days flow-through chronic experiment on daphnids is conducted according to the guidelines USEPA-TSCA (U.S. EPA, 1992) and ASTM (1988) and is well documented in the paper. The degree of ethoxylation of the tested mixture described in the paper (6.5 EO) is higher than the degree of ethoxylation described for CAS 68213-23-0 (2.5 EO) the NOEC of 0.77 mg/L for reproduction can be used for read-across.

Nevertheless the data allow not to derive a precise long-term effect value for the described mixture (C12 -18 < 2.5 EO, CAS 68213-23-0).Alcohol ethoxylate specific QSARs were developed to describe the toxicity of varying mixtures (Wind & Belanger, 2006; Boeije et al., 2006; Belanger et al, 2006). The QSARs considered all three trophic levels (algae, invertebrates and fish). The effects are described as EC20 values, since the QSARs are more robust for the EC20 values than for NOEC or EC10 values (Boeije et al., 2006). For the described mixture (C12 -18 < 2.5 EO, CAS 68213-23-0) the QSAR for long-term toxicity on reproduction of Daphnia magna (Boeije et al., 2006) results in an EC20 (21d, reproduction) of 0.469 mg/L. This result is used as key value for classification and labeling.
