Additional information

Appearance/physical state/colour

The substance is a white to light yellow powder with a slight characteristic odour.

Melting point/freezing point

This study was to evaluate the melting point of test substance DL-Panthenol and it was carried out in accordance with the EEC Method A.1. and the OECD guideline no. 102. A test item with a 99.6% purity was used. The determination was performed using the DSC method (thermal analysis) and the melting point was determined to be 63.3 °C ± 0.1 °C.

Boiling point

This study was to evaluate the boiling point of test substance DL-Panthenol and it was carried out in accordance with the EEC Method A.2. and the OECD guideline no. 103. A test item with a 99.6% purity was used.

The determination was performed using the DSC method (thermal analysis) and the boiling point was determined to be 239.8 °C ± 1.7 °C.

Density

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the density of DL-Panthenol.

The study was performed in accordance with the EEC directive 92/69/EEC, A.3 "Relative density" and the density was determined to be 1.288 g/cm³.

Particle size distribution

According to REACH Annex VII, column 2, a study on particle size distribution can be waived if the substance is not marketed or used in solid form. During storage, the substance can form a solid mass. This form of the substance was used for other physical/chemical tests. Nevertheless during formulation and end us the substance is always handled in liquid preparations. Thus a test on granulometry is not required.

Vapour pressure

The purpose of this study was to determine the vapour pressure of test item DL-Panthenol. This study has been performed in accordance to the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals No. 104 and guideline 92/69/EEC, A.4. The result of the vapour pressure of DL-Panthenol was 3.6 10E-03 Pa (extrapolated) at 25 °C.

Partition coefficient

The n-octanol / water partition coefficient (log Pow) of DL-Panthenol was calculated to be ‑ 1.02 using the flask shaking method.

Water solubility

The purpose of this study was to determine the water solubility of test item DL-Panthenol. The method acc. to OECD Guideline 105 was being applied, making use of the flaks method with HPLC analysis. The solubility, correct to two significant figures, of the pure test substance in water was determined to be 562.3 g/L at room temperature. The test substance DL-Panthenol therefore is considered to be very soluble in water.

Surface tension

The purpose of this study was to determine the surface tension of aqueous solutions of test item DL-Panthenol.

The determination of the surface tension was accomplished by means of a tensiometer, using the ring method. The force which was required to withdraw a horizontally suspended ring from the surface of the solution is measured.

The surface tension of test substance was: s = 70.2 mN/m (at a concentration of about 0.1%).

Based on the criteria as outlined in the EEC Guideline and on the results of this study, DL-Panthenol has to be considered as a not surface active substance.

Flash point

In accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI, the flash point study does not need to be conducted as the substance is a solid.

Auto flammability

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the self-ignition temperature of test item DL-Panthenol. DL-Panthenol showed no exothermic reaction up to 400 °C. Thus, DL-Panthenol can be considered as not auto-flammable.

Flammability

The purpose of this study was to determine the flammability of the solid test substance DL-Panthenol. The study followed the protocol acc. to EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids)). As the outcome of the study, the substance is not considered as highly flammable.

Explosiveness

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the explosive properties of test item DL-Panthenol. Even if the oxygen balance is slightly above -200 (here -196), it can be concluded, based on the results of the DSC test and due to the missing of chemical groups associated with explosive properties, that DL-Panthenol should not be considered as an explosive material and no experimental determination according to the EC test guideline A.14 has to be performed.

Oxidising properties

According to REACH Annex VII, column 2, a study on oxidizing properties needs not to be carried out, if the test item -based on its chemical structure- is unable to react exothermally with flammable substances. This is the case for test item DL-Panthenol acc. to the requirements in the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (Manual of Tests and Criteria, 4th revised edition, 2003, Appendix 6, "Orange Book"), since the oxygen atoms of this molecule all are bound to carbon atoms. Furthermore the DL-Panthenol molecule does not contain chlorine or fluorine atoms. This waiver justification is based on a Klimisch-1-rated expert statement prepared by Harlan Laboratories Ltd., 2009 (see "data source").

Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products

According to REACH Annex IX column 2, assessment of the stability in organic solvents can be waived as the substance is stable in organic solvents.

Dissociation constant

In the present study, the dissociation constant (pKa) of DL-Panthenol in water was determined by titration with 0.01 M sodium hydroxide solution. The dissociation constant was determined to be pKa = 11.6

The pKa value indicates a weak acid and it can be concluded that there is no significant dissociation in the relevant pH range.

Viscosity

In accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI, the viscosity study was not conducted as the substance was solubilised during testing.
