Description of key information

In the key study entitled “Statement on 3,3’,4,4’-Benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride: Hydrolysis as a Function of pH: according to OECD Guideline No. 111 (2004) and Council Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, Method C.7” performed at DR.U.NOACK-LABORATORIEN Sarstedt, Germany in 2012, a hydrolytic half life, at ambient temperature, of less than 10 minutes was assumed based on the data obtained during a preliminary study.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life for hydrolysis:
10 min
at the temperature of:
40 °C

Additional information

In the preliminary test a solution with a concentration of 10 mg/L of the substance was prepared in HPLC-water and immediately injected 10 times into the analytical system. Due to the fast transformation only the transformation product 3,3,4,4 -Benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) could be detected. After 9 minutes (sample preparation, including chromatographic separation) a transformation rate of already 100% was determined on basis of the BTCA measurements. Due to the fast transformation, no hydroloysis testing on basis of the OECD 111 guideline could be performed. A hydrolytic half life of less than 10 minutes could be assumed at environmentally relevant temperatures.
