The relevant part of the submission item Guanidine carbonate is the Guanidine (CAS 113-00-8) as discussed in the section on Environmental fate and pathways above. It is present as the Guanidinium kation (see section Dissociation constant). The carbonate, which is fully mineralized, is negligible for the environmental assessment and disregarded in the following discussion.

Full mineralization. i.e. ultimate biodegradation, of the Guanidinium kation is experimentally evidenced by studies using carbon-14 radiolabelled materials in surface water samples (Mitchell 1987) and in soils (Mitchell 1987 Bull Environ contam Toxicol, Williams 1989). The soil mineralization product nitrate is evidenced by Lees & Quastel (1946) and Praveen-Kumar & Brumme (1999), who used unlabelled test items. Furthermore Praveen-Kumar & Brumme (1999) show the transformation to carbon dioxide and the intermediate nitrogen product ammonium, which undergoes further nitrification, in soils

In conclusion the submission item should be regarded as inherently biodegradable in the environment.
