The composition, physical and chemical properties of oil shale thermal processing residue are variable. This arises principally from the raw materials and from the combustion and abatement technologies used. Based on the chemical nature of oil shale thermal processing residue (inorganic structure and chemical stability of the main compound: Si-O bond is highly stable), neither photo- or chemical degradation, nor biodegradation (due the absence of carbon atoms within the constituents of the UVCB) is expected. Therefore, degradation is considered negligible.
