Description of key information

A ready biodegradability study is available for polyglycerol.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

No study with diglycerol itself is available. The biodegradability of Polyglycerol-3 (read across substance, existing partly of diglycerol, see section 13 of IUCLID for the read across report) was examined in a closed bottle test performed according to OECD 301D and EU C.6 test guidelines. Polyglycerol-3 (2 mg/l and 5 mg/l) was added to an aqueous solution of mineral salt and exposed to unadapted microorganisms (activated sludge) under aerobic conditions. In the test, 60% of the test substance was degraded within 28 days. It is concluded that Polyglycerol-3 is readily biodegradable. Therefore, diglycerol is also considered to be readily biodegradable.
