Description of key information

Abiotic degradation

(3-Chloropropyl)triethoxysilane (CAS 5089-70-3; EC No. 225-805-6) has a hydrolysis half-life of 35 hours at 25°C and pH 7 (measured).

The hydrolysis products are (3-chloropropyl)silanetriol (CAS 64426-41-1) and ethanol (CAS 64-17-5; EC No. 200-578-6).

Half-lives of 0.8 days and 1.3 days for reaction with hydroxyl radicals in air have been calculated for (3-chloropropyl)triethoxysilane and (3-chloropropyl)silanetriol, respectively.

Biotic degradation

46% biodegradation in 28 days was attained in a reliable ready biodegradation study conducted according to an appropriate test protocol, and in compliance with GLP. This biodegradation is attributable to the biodegradation of the ethanol hydrolysis product, which is readily biodegradable (OECD 2004). No significant biodegradation is expected for the silanol hydrolysis product.

It is not necessary to obtain further information on biodegradation via simulation tests in water, sediment or soil.

Table 4.1.4: Degradation rates

Degradation rate in water:

Hydrolysis half-life: 35 h at 25°C and pH 7. No significant biodegradation expected for the silanol hydrolysis product.

Degradation rate in sediment:

Hydrolysis may occur (hydrolysis half-life in water 35 h at 25°C and pH 7). No significant biodegradation expected for the silanol hydrolysis product.

Degradation rate in soil:

Hydrolysis may occur (hydrolysis half-life in water 35 h at 25°C and pH 7). No significant biodegradation expected for the silanol hydrolysis product.

Degradation rate in air:

Half-life for reaction with hydroxyl radicals in air: 0.8 days for the parent substance and 1.3 days for the silanol hydrolysis product (calculated).
