Abiotic degradation

N-(3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propyl)ethylenediamine hydrolyses very rapidly (half-life 0.025 h at pH 7 and 24.7°C, see Section 4.1.1.1).

A half-life of 0.1 days for reaction with hydroxyl radicals in air has been calculated for N-(3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl)ethylenediamine.

The hydrolysis products are N-(3-(trihydroxysilyl)propyl)ethylenediamine and methanol.

A half-life of 0.1 days for reaction with hydroxyl radicals in air has been calculated for N-(3-(trihydroxysilyl)propyl)ethylenediamine.

Biotic degradation

39% degradation in 28 days (DOC) has been determined for the submission substance. This biodegradation is associated with the biodegradation of the methanol hydrolysis product, which is readily biodegradable (OECD 2004). The silanol hydrolysis product, N-(3-(trihydroxysilyl)propyl)ethylenediamine, is not expected to biodegrade.

The chemical safety assessment indicates that it is not necessary to obtain further information on biodegradation via simulation tests in water, sediment or soil.

Table 4.1.4 Degradation rates

Degradation rate in water:

Hydrolysis half-life: 0.025 h at 24.7°C. No significant biodegradation expected for the silanol hydrolysis product.

Degradation rate in sediment:

Hydrolysis may occur (hydrolysis half-life in water: 0.025 h at 24.7°C). No significant biodegradation expected for the silanol hydrolysis product.

Degradation rate in soil:

Hydrolysis may occur (hydrolysis half-life in water: 0.025 h at 24.7°C). No significant biodegradation expected for the silanol hydrolysis product.

Degradation rate in air:

Half-life for reaction with hydroxyl radicals in air: 0.1 days (calculated).

Half-life for reaction with hydroxyl radicals in air of silanol hydrolysis product: 0.1 days (calculated).
