Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The ASA Category comprises 5 aromatic sulphonic acids and the melting point are:

TSA, Toluene-4-sulphonic acid (EC 203-180-0, CAS 104-15-4): 30 °C

XSA, (Xylenes and 4-ethylbenzene) sulphonic acid (EC 701-247-3, CAS -) Former EC 246-839-8: -23 °C

CSA, p-cumene sulphonic acid (EC 240-210-1, CAS 16066-35-6): 12 °C

BSA, Benzene sulphonic acid (EC 202-638-7, CAS 98-11-3): 12 °C

HBSA, 4-hydroxybenzensulphonic acid (EC No. 202-691-6, CAS No. 98-67-9): -1 °C

The melting/freezing points for the 5 aromatic sulphonic acids were all 30°C or below; the range was -23 to 30 °C. A medium value has been selected as key value for the Chemical Safety Assessment, representing the real impact of those substances in environmental conditions. They are indeed very hygroscopic, then deliquescent even below their melting point. The consequence is that most of them at 25 °C are in fact liquid.
