Sulphuric acid, compound with graphite is an inorganic solid, consisting of natural graphite and variable amounts of intercalated sulphuric acid.
Graphite is a naturally occurring substance, insoluble in water, which is not bioavailable; it does not cross biological membranes and is not systemically available. The intercalated sulphuric acid is partially leached out by water and dissociated into the biologically ubiquitous sulphate and hydronium ions. Due to their ionic character, they do not cross biological membranes. Sulphate is a normal biological constituent of the body, a normal biological metabolite and a degradation product of sulphur-containing amino-acids. Sulphate ions are unlikely to cause allergy, since the body contains large amounts of sulphate ions (~ 0.33 mmol/L in serum and about 50 times higher concentration intracellularly).
Since both, graphite and the intercalated sulphuric acid, are lipophobic the skin penetration capabilities and the sensitising potential are not crucial.
Furthermore, companies involved in the elaboration of the registration dossier confirmed by certificates of their company doctors that in up to 20 years of manufacturing, handling and use of sulphuric acid, compound with graphite no cases of skin sensitisation occurred due to exposure of workers to this substance.
Taking into account the physico-chemical properties of the substance and the long-term experience in manufacturing, handling and use, no skin sensitisation is to be expected from sulphuric acid, compound with graphite. Against this background and in conformity with ECHAs principle of avoiding unnecessary animal testing, it is considered unnecessary to perform a skin sensitisation study.

Justification for classification or non-classification
Taking into account the physico-chemical properties of the substance and the long-term experience in manufacturing, handling and use, no skin/respiratory sensitisation is to be expected from sulphuric acid, compound with graphite.
Furthermore, companies involved in the elaboration of the registration dossier confirmed by certificates of their company doctors that in up to 20 years of manufacturing, handling and use of sulphuric acid, compound with graphite no cases of skin sensitisation or respiratory sensitisation occurred due to exposure of workers to this substance.
Against this background it can be concluded that there is no classification obligation according to the CLP Regulation.
