- Justification:
Dichloromethane is readily biodegradable as shown in a closed bottle test. Dichloromethane is a very volatile substance and the calculated half-life in air of dichloromethane is 107 days, in water 10.9 days and in soil 14.2 days. Therefore dichloromethane is not Persistent.
Experimental BCF values are available. The highest observed BCF in fish was 40 L/kg, thus dichloromethane is not Bioaccumulative.
The acute effect concentrations of dichloromethane for all three trophic levels exceed the screening criterion of 0.1 mg/L (lowest acute effect concentration is 27 mg/L for Daphnia). It can therefore be considered that dichloromethane is not acutely toxic towards aquatic organisms.
The lowest empirical chronic effect concentration was 83 mg/L for fish (6.2 mg/L as modeled value for daphnids), greatly exceeding the definite criterion of 0.01 mg/L.
Dichloromethane is not classified for CMR and no classification is needed for T, R48 or Xn, R48 (EC 67/548/EEC) or STOT repeated exposure Cat. 1 or 2 (EC 1272/2008). It is concluded dichloromethane is not to be considered T.
