Description of key information

Acrylonitrile is reported to be a clear, colourless liquid with a faintly pungent odour (Kirk-Othmer, 2001) which is highly soluble in water (73 g/L at 20 oC). The test substance has a freezing point of -83.5 °C (Kirk-Othmer, 2001) and a boiling point of 77.3 °C at atmospheric pressure. The density of acrylonitrile at 20 °C is reported to be 0.806 g/mL (Kirk-Othmer, 2001) and 0.8004 g/mL at 25 °C (American Cyanamid, 1959). The vapour pressure of acrylonitrile is reported to be 11.5 kPa at 20 °C (Kirk-Othmer, 2001) and 133.3 hPa at 23.6 °C (Ullman, 1974). A surface tension study is not required as surface activity is not a desired property of the acrylonitrile.

The partition coefficient of acrylonitrile was measured to be 1.04 at 21 °C, log10 Pow 1.65x10-2 (Butler et al., 2014). The Log Pow for acrylonitrile is also reported to be 0.25 at 25 °C (Pratesi et al.,1979), 0.11 at 25 °C (CITI, 1996) and 0.08 at 25 °C (BASF AG).

The substance is not classified under any physical hazard EU CLP endpoint apart from Flammable liquids (as a Flammable Liquid category 2) - it has a flash point of 0 °C at atmospheric pressure (Kirk-Othmer, 2001). It has an auto ignition temperature of 481 oC at atmospheric pressure.
