Description of key information


Acrylonitrile is degraded in the atmosphere, in water and in soil. The EU RAR reports half-lives of 5 days, 150 days and 300 days respectively for the troposphere, surface water and soil; however reported values of 2 -30 days for surface water and 6 days for soil are also noted. Photolytic degradation in surface water has also been reported. Acrylonitrile is hydrolytically stable.


Acrylonitrile does not meet the criteria for readily biodegradable, but can be considered inherently biodegradable based on the results of experimental studies. In practice, rapid biodegradation of acrylonitrile is noted in acclimated WWTP. Biodegradation of acrylonitrile by soil bacteria is also noted.


No data are available for bioaccumulation, however physicochemical properties (water solubility, log Kow) of the substance and experimental evidence suggest that acrylonitrile is unlikely to bioaccumulate in exposed biota.

Transport and distribution

Calculated Koc values, experimental data and the water solubility of the substance indicate that there is little potential for the adsorption of acrylonitrile to soil or sediments. Acrylonitrile can be regarded as a moderately volatile compound, based on the calculated Henry's Law constant of 9.6 Pa/m3/mol-1.
