Qualifier:
no guideline required
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Review of data available from other published studies.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of study / information:
The study aims to select and prioritize substances based on the risk they are likely to cause if spilled into the marine environment. In order to do this the study takes into account information on the volumes transported, reported incidents, physico-chemical properties and toxicity to marine organisms. Acrylonitrile is among the substances considered and data is included for toxicity to marine organisms.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Acute and chronic values are presented for a number of freshwater and marine species. The lowest acute acute value was for Artemia salina with a 48-hour EC50 of 14.34 mg/L. The lowest chronic endpoint is that of Daphnia magna, with a 21-day NOEC of 0.5 mg/L.
Executive summary:

A review was conducted of public domain data for the aquatic toxicity of acrylonitrile in order to assess the risk to the marine environment. Studies for both freshwater and marine species were presented.

The lowest acute acute value was for Artemia salina with a 48-hour EC50 of 14.34 mg/L. The lowest chronic endpoint is that of Daphnia magna, with a 21-day NOEC of 0.5 mg/L.
