Endpoint:
explosive properties of explosives
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
1996
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: A 14 (body responsible: Zeneca Specialties Blackley, Manchester)
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Key result
Parameter:
sensitiveness to impact: impact energy (J)
Remarks on result:
not sensitive to impact using an impact energy of 40 J
Key result
Parameter:
sensitiveness to friction: friction load (N)
Remarks on result:
not sensitive to friction using a friction load of 360 N
Key result
Parameter:
thermal sensitivity - Koenen test: diameter of the orifice plate
Remarks on result:
negative (not further specified)

Mechanical Sensitivity (Shock): No signs of ignition or explosion on impact. When the test assembly was dismantled after the trial, there were no sign of decompisition in alle the six tests.

Mechanical Sensitivity (Friction): No signs of ignition or explosion during all the six tests.

Thermal sensitivity

Trial Number  Orifice diameter  Tube condition  t1  t2
 1  6mm  0  15s  294s
 2  6mm  0  12s  323s
 3  6mm  0  9s  321s
 4  2mm  D  13s  62s
 5  2mm  B  11s  311s
 6  2mm  D  12s  51s

where

0 = Tube recovered unchanged

B = Bottom and wall of tube bulged out

D = wall of tube split

t1 = Time elapsed from ignition of burners to the first noticeable reaction of the test substance

t2 = time elapsed from t1 to the end of the reaction

In trials 4 and 6, the splitting of the tube wall exstinguished the burner flames just over a minute into the test.

In the other trials, after a time t1, the fumes venting through the orifice ignited and burned with a flame for a time t2.

Interpretation of results:
other: non explosive
Conclusions:
Limit Impact energy > 40 Joules. The test substance is not classified as explosive in terms of its mechanical sensitivity with respect to shock.
Limit Load > 360 Newtons. the test substance is not classified as explosive in terms of its mechanical sensitivity with respcet to friction.
No explosion were observed using either the 6mm or the 2mm orifice plates, ie. Limiting diameter < 2mm. The test substance is not classified as explosive in terms of its thermal sensitivity.

the test substance did not give a positive result in tests used to determine its sensitivity to shock, friction or heating under confinement, and is therefore not classififed as an explosive.

Description of key information

Additional information

Limit Impact energy is > 40 Joules. The test substance is not classified as explosive in terms of its mechanical sensitivity with respect to shock.

Limit Load is > 360 Newtons.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The test substance did not give a positive result in tests used to determine its sensitivity to shock, friction or heating under confinement, therefore no classification for explosive properties has been warranted under EC 1272/2008.
