Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity data of barium dibenzoate are not available. Read-across to the assessment entities soluble barium substances and benzoic acid is applied for the assessment of barium dibenzoate since the ions of barium dibenzoate determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. Reliable data available for soluble barium substances and dibenzoate indicate that the moiety of ecotoloxicological concern are barium cations.

Acute (short-term) toxicity data: EC/LC50 values of 3 trophic levels (algae, invertebrates and fish) range for barium from > 1.15 mg Ba/L to 14.5 mg Ba/L and for benzoic acid from 33.1 mg/L benzoic acid to > 100 mg/L benzoic acid.

Chronic (long-term) toxicity: NOEC/EC10 values of 3 trophic levels (algae, invertebrates and fish) range from ≥ 1.15 mg Ba/L to 2.9 mg Ba/L and for benzoic acid from 3.4

mg/L benzoic acid to 120 mg/L benzoic acid.

The potential of barium cations and benzoate anions for toxicity to aquatic microorganisms is low since the NOEC for respiration inhibition is ≥1000 mg/L BaCl2 and the lowest EC10 value of benzoic acid is also estimated with ≥ 1000 mg/L.   In sum, the potential of barium dibenzoate for toxicity to aquatic organisms appears to be low.
