The oxidising potential of the test material was predicted by analogy with existing compounds. The chemical structure of the test material was examined and ascertained whether or not there are any groups present that are associated with oxidising properties (Appendix 6 of the United Nations ‘Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria’). From an examination of the chemical structure of the test material, it was confirmed that it contained oxygen, but only chemically bonded to carbon or hydrogen. Neither fluorine nor chlorine are present. Consequently, the test material would not be expected to possess oxidising properties.
