Bioaccumulation: aquatic / sediment

Description of key information

Bioaccumulation refers to uptake from all environmental sources including water, food and sediment. According to column 2 of Annex IX (standard information requirements for substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 100 tonnes or more) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 an extended study review is presented on Ferronickel slags dossier 2010 for bioaccumulation in aquatic species.
The bioaccumulation of Ferronickel slags has been considered and is discussed in detail in Ferronickel slags dossier 2010. There is some (inconclusive) evidence for bioaccumulation of slags.
Generally, experimental studies in local environment indicate that the local environment is enriched with a variety of metals and these metals are accumulated by marine organisms. However, different species accumulate different metals to a different extent and assessments of the effects of pollution must be taken into account.
