Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment
Administrative data
PBT assessment: overall result
- Name:
- Methacrylic anhydride LE
- Type of composition:
- legal entity composition of the substance
- State / form:
- liquid
- Related composition:
- Methacrylic anhydride BC
- Reference substance:
- Methacrylic anhydride LE
- PBT status:
- the substance is not PBT / vPvB
- Justification:
Persistence assessment
Methacrylic anhydride rapidly hydrolysis to methacrylic acid in aqueous media. Therefore assessment of Methacrylic anhydride in aquatic media based on studies with methacrylic acid is recommended.
Methacrylic acid is demonstrated to be readily biodegradable in a 28 days OECD 301 D test and passed the 10 day window. Therefore, the substance is considered as not P (not persistent) and not vP (not very persistent).
Bioaccumulation assessment
Methacrylic anhydride rapidly hydrolysis to methacrylic acid in aqueous media. Therefore assessment of Methacrylic anhydride in aquatic media based on studies with methacrylic acid is recommended.
Log Kow of methacrylic acid is 0.93 measured by shake flask method and the calculated log KOW of methacrylic anhydride is 1.28 (KOWWIN 1.68). Both values are fare below 4.5. Therefore the substance is demonstrated to be not B (bioaccumulative) and not vB (not very bioaccumulative).
Toxicity assessment
Methacrylic anhydride rapidly hydrolysis to methacrylic acid in aqueous media. Therefore assessment of aquatic toxicity to Methacrylic anhydride based on studies with methacrylic acid is recommended.
Based on aquatic toxicity test methacrylic acid is not classified as acute or chronic toxic to aquatic organisms. EC and LC50 values are fare above 0.1 mg/l (LC50/96h) fish: 85 mg/l; EC50/48h daphnia magna: > 130 mg/l; ECr50/72h) algae: 45 mg/l. Chronic values are fare above 1 mg/l. NOEC (35d) fish: 10 mg/l; NOECr algae (72 h): 8.2 mg/l.
8.1.2. Summary and overall conclusions on PBT or vPvB properties
In conclusion, methacrylic anhydride as well as methycrylic acid is not PBT nor vPvB substance.
