Description of key information

 48-hour EC50 values between > 100 mg/L and 124 mg/L and NOEC values between < 60 mg/L and > 119 mg/L have been determined for the effects of a read-across substances and constituents of GLS-Silane on mobility of Daphnia magna.

There are no test data for GLS-Silane. Data are available for the constituents of GLS-Silane, their hydrolysis products or structurally similar analogues. The hydrolysis half-life of chlorosilanes indicate that, under conditions relevant to the algal toxicity test, hydrolysis to a silanediol and hydrogen chloride will occur. The properties of hydrogen chloride are well characterised. Its effects on aquatic organisms are limited to those that result from changes to pH in unbuffered media.

Silanes comprise 74 -97% w/w of GLS-Silane. The remaining constiuents are hydrocarbons. Three of the hydrocarbons are liqufied gases present at <1%. The other hydrocarbon, 2 -methyl butane, is present at >3 -<10% w/w. Therefore, toxicity of GLS-Silane is determined based on the toxicity of its silane constituents or their read-across compounds. EC50 values for the silane and/or silanols are all > 100 mg/L.

There are no test data for Trichlorosilane. However, a 48-hr EC50 of >100 mg/L and NOEC of ≥100 mg/L have been determined for the effects of a related substance, Trimethoxysilane (CAS 2487-90-3), on mobility of Daphnia magna. It is likely that the test organisms were exposed to the hydrolysis products of the substance.

 

No data are available for Chlorodimethylsilane. A 48-hr EC50 of 124 mg/L has however been determined for the effects of a read-across substance, Trimethylsilanol (CAS 1066-40-6), on mobility of Daphnia magna. A NOEC of <60 mg/L has been determined in the same test.

A 48-hr EC50 value of >103 mg/L and NOEC of ≥103 mg/L have been determined for the effects of Tetramethylsilane on mobility of Daphnia magna.

No data for short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates are available for dichloro(methyl)silane. However a study of short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates is available for the related substance dimethylsilanediol. Dimethylsilanediol, 1066-42-8, is a close structural analogue of Methylsilanediol, which is the hydrolysis product of Dichloro(methyl)silane, 75-54-7. A 48-hour EC50 value of >119 mg/L and NOEC of ≥119 mg/L have been determined for the effects of Dimethylsilanediol on mobility of Daphnia magna.
