The aquatic toxicity of PC2414 was tested using the crustacean Daphnia magna and the micro algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. PC2414 is rapidly hydrolysed when mixed in water and therefore, the tests were mainly testing the toxicity of the hydrolysis products (NHS and Impurity No. 4).

No acute toxic effect of PC2414 was observed on the immobility of Daphnia magna after 48 hours in the control or in any of the tested concentrations, hence the 48 h EC10 and EC50 was > 400 mg PC2414/L (highest nominal concentration). PC2414 was tested for inhibitory effect on the growth of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. No linear dose-response relationship was found in the test. However the 72 hour ErC50 and EbC50 toxicity values could be estimated to be > 200 mg/L.

The no linear dose-relationship is most probable caused by the change of the test product from PC2414 into hydrolysis products, presuming that PC2414 and its hydrolysis products are having different toxicity to the algae. A No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) of < 10 mg/L could be derived (lowest nominal concentration).
