In accordance with column 2, adaptation of Annex VIII (section 9.1.4) "the study does not need to be conducted if there are mitigating factors indicating that microbial toxicity is unlikely to occur, for instance the substance is highly insoluble in water.

Therefore, the short-term toxicity to microorganisms according to OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals (1984) No 209 "Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test", Method C.11 of EEC Commission Directive 88/302/EEC was not conducted.

Additionally, a substance can be assumed to be not inhibitory to aquatic microorganisms, if in the toxicity control of a ready biodegradation test, more than 35% degradation removal occurred within 14 days (OECD guidance 301). For the structure related Alcohols, lanolin (CAS 8027-33-6) which was used in a read-across approach to cover the biodegradability of Alcohols, lanolin, distn. residues (CAS No. 90622-40-5), a biodegradation test according to OECD guideline 301B is available. This test includes a toxicity control containing of about 15 mg/L of test substance. The toxicity control attained 49% degradation after 14 days of incubation. Hence, the substance was not toxic to aquatic microorganisms in the toxicity control and the highest test concentration of 15 mg/L can be determined as NOEC.
