Description of key information

An inkling of toxicity of 2,4-dinitrophenol on microrganisms were found on biodegradation studies. In an aerobic biodegradation and in a biodegradation under methanogenic conditions with anaerobic digester sludge studies also a toxic level of c.a 10 -20 mg/L of 2,4-dinitrophenol was defined. A detailed study on sludge activity indicates a NOEC (no inhibitory effect) of 4 ppm of 2,4-dinitrophenol.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Inkling of toxicity of 2,4-dinitrophenol on microrganisms were found on biodegradation studies. In an aerobic biodegradation and in a biodegradation under methanogenic conditions with anaerobic digester sludge studies also a toxic level of c.a 10 -20 mg/L of 2,4-dinitrophenol was defined (O'Connor and Young, 1989). Furthermore, in another study it has explained that little or no inhibitory effect were observed at concentration <= 20 mg/L (Tabak et al., 1981).

A detailed study on sludge activity indicates a NOEC (no inhibitory effect) of 4 ppm of 2,4-dinitrophenol. This value it ha been considered as the most relevant and conservative (Linvil G. Rich and Oscar W. Yates, JR. The Effect of 2, 4-Dinitrophenol on Activated Sludge, Sanitary Engineering Division, Department of Civil Engineering, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Virginia, 1954).
