Description of key information

The toxicity of 1-amino-4-chlorobenzene towards Daphnia magna was assessed according to a national standard method on acute toxicty towards invertebrates after a test duration of 48 h yielding an EC50 (nominal) of 0.05 mg/L (Maas-Diepeveen & van Leeuven, 1986).
4-Chlorophenyl isocyanate is know to rapidly hydrolyse forming 1-amino-4-chlorobenzene as only hydrolysis product with a half-live of 7.3 h. With respect to a test duration of 48 h, 4-chlorophenyl isocyanate would be completely degraded and observed effects are rather caused by the hydrolysis product than by the parent substance. Thus, the effect of 1-amino-4-chlorobenzene was chosen to characterize the ecotoxicological potential of 4-chlorophenyl isocyanate towards daphnids.
